Jacob Bergson is a musician and producer based in New York City. He produces and writes music with artists around the globe, and currently performs live with Nerve and Rubblebucket.
We chatted with Jacob about how he’s using the Prophet 12.
Jacob, what made you choose the Prophet 12?
“I demoed the Prophet 12 at DSI Headquarters right after it hit the market. The sounds that I could get out of it were immediately inspiring, so I decided right then and there that I needed to own one.”
How are you using it?
“I’ve been using it mostly as a tool for writing and production thus far, and it has shined in that role. However, I’m planning to take it on the road in November, and integrate it permanently into my live rig.“
What’s one of your favorite things about it?
“Ease of use. I have the module version of the Prophet 12, and I think that DSI has done a tremendous job with the user interface. I’ve never used another module that’s so quick, simple, and logical to program. The full keyboard version is quite nice as well, but I’d advise anyone interested in this synth to really consider the module.”
What does it give you that other synths might not?
“I specifically wanted the Prophet 12 because of its digital oscillators. At that time all of my other hardware synths were fully analog, and I needed some hardware that could create some of the timbres that my other synths could not. What it gives me is an incredible amount of sound design possibilities. It also just plain sounds great, and sits in a mix beautifully with no EQ. It always makes my job easier.”
Any interesting Prophet 12 tricks or techniques you’d like to share?
“You can modulate the VCA with envelopes 3 and/or 4, in addition to using the normal amp envelope. That’ll allow you to create more interesting, complex, and evolving note shapes than just a standard ADSR. Then crank up the distortion!“
