The Prophet-5 is revered by artists for its unique and influential sound that has shaped music for decades. Introduced in 1978 as the world’s first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer, it revolutionized music production by enabling musicians to instantly save and recall sounds. Today’s Prophet-5 Rev4 remains faithful to the original design, recreating the analog circuitry that produces its rich warm tone, while still adding a few new twists that modern musicians love.
For nearly 50 years, the Prophet-5 has lent its classic tone to iconic songs by artists like Phil Collins, Hall & Oates, A-ha, Michael Jackson, Radiohead, and Taylor Swift among countless others. Discover its rich musical legacy and kick off your Prophet-5 journey with some of our favorite tracks.
The Prophet-5 Rev4 faithfully recreates all of its previous revisions, ending any debate over which version is the best by simply encapsulating them all. Rev4’s Vintage knob and switchable filters allow you to choose whichever Prophet-5 character you desire – Rev1, Rev2 or Rev3 – and even experiment with new combinations of attributes.
The Prophet-5 Rev1 and Rev2 featured SSM filters that were rich in character but could be temperamental, while the Rev3 switched to the Curtis filter for more stability and control. Today, reissues of both analog filter chips let you experience their unique qualities without worrying about reliability. The Rev4 offers the best of both worlds, allowing you to choose your ideal Prophet-5 sound.
The Prophet-5 returns with carefully chosen modern enhancements that were not available on the original instruments. Velocity and aftertouch introduce dynamic control, making each performance more expressive and vibrant. And seamless MIDI connectivity ensures the Prophet-5 integrates effortlessly into any contemporary studio setup.

Dave Smith, the creator of the Prophet-5 and founder of Sequential, is no longer with us. But he shared the story of the creation of this era-defining product in this video. Powered by microprocessor control, the Prophet-5 was the first synthesizer that could save and recall sounds—an unprecedented feature at the time. This innovation combined with five-note polyphony transformed the landscape of electronic music, and made the Prophet-5 a model for nearly every synthesizer to come.

With Poly Mod, you can easily explore exponential FM, extreme filter effects, and pulse width modulation by routing its sources to destinations like oscillator and filter frequencies. This simple yet versatile system continues to yield exciting new sonic discoveries.
The Prophet-5 features a global LFO that can be brought in using the mod wheel. Additionally, Oscillator B can be set to low frequency mode, allowing for per-voice LFO modulations, yet it can also produce a range of gritty timbral effects when set to pitched oscillator frequencies.
Wheel Mod allows you to quickly assign modulation routes to the mod wheel where you can use them in performance.
Prophet-5 offers a spring-loaded pitch wheel with selectable range per program, while the mod wheel can be easily set to a number of expressive modulations using the Wheel Mod section.
The iconic tone of the Prophet-5 oscillators comes from its simultaneously selectable wave shapes—sawtooth, pulse, and triangle—along with pulse width modulation, and also including the unmistakable hard sync sound, famously used in ‘Let’s Go’ by The Cars.
Glide Rate allows you to create smooth transitions between notes, adding a distinct, flowing character to bass lines, leads, and pads, as heard throughout electronic music, hip-hop, and beyond.
Unison mode transforms the Prophet-5 into a powerful monophonic synthesizer, allowing you to stack up to five voices on one note for a truly massive analog sound.
The Rev4 offers a premium 5-octave keyboard with velocity and aftertouch, adding new dynamics and expression to classic Prophet-5 sounds.
The Prophet-5 is packed with 200 user and 200 factory programs, including the iconic original preset bank that fueled countless hit records.
Global settings are now available from the top panel, giving you full command of your Prophet’s behavior.
The rich character of all three vintage versions, or “Revs” of the Prophet-5 is captured in the two switchable filters of the new Rev4. Select “1/2” for the SSM filter and “3” for the Curtis sound.
The behavior of the Envelopes is crucial for capturing the feel of vintage Prophet-5s, including the slight timing variations between voices, which can now be controlled using the Vintage knob.
Velocity and aftertouch add new dimensions to this revitalized Prophet. Applying them to the filter and envelopes gives you enhanced dynamics and expression, redefining your experience of the legendary Prophet-5 sound.
The addition of MIDI connectivity ensures the Prophet-5 now integrates effortlessly into any modern studio setup.
On the Prophet-5, the Release jack accepts a momentary footswitch to control sustain behavior, interacting with the Prophet’s distinctive Release switch. Meanwhile, there are two inputs for standard expression pedals: one to control volume, and the other for filter cutoff.
The CV and Gate I/O allows the Prophet-5 to integrate with other analog gear, expanding its capabilities and allowing for more complex and unique sound possibilities.
Staying true to the vintage Prophet-5, the Rev4 features a single, unbalanced ¼ inch audio output jack for mono signals. (However, we’ve broken with tradition by adding a headphone output.)
