What made you choose the Trigon-6?
Over the years of doing session work, there were always DSI/Sequential synths in various New York City studios that I was able to use on records. I thought the workflow was very intuitive and the sounds were amazing. At this time I owned a few different synth brands but never felt at home for what I was trying to achieve sonically and technically. I subbed in my friend’s indie pop band, and they were using Sequential synths all over their records and also using them on stage live. After that I knew that Sequential was the synth I wanted to own and use. I think the Trigon-6 is the best of many worlds with 3 oscillators, its simplicity yet massive sound, and sweet analog tone.
How are you using it?
I use it live and in the studio with various bands that I work and record with. It’s easy to use for everything: lush pads, different types of leads, or even in unison mode for huge synth bass. I also like to get lost using it when composing/recording and can easily save patches for fast recall.
What is one of your favorite things about it?
Besides the fact that it is so intuitive and easy to use, I love that it can be powerful in the studio, and then you can take that same exact sound on stage with you in a workhorse, easy-to-bring around, gigging setup. Having the onboard effects is great. Sometimes I can get lost and end up taking more time than needed trying to use plugins in a DAW or even effects pedals, but the fact that the Trigon-6 has the effects easily built in really helps speed up the process for me to envision the sound I’m hearing.
What does it give you that other synths might not?
Combining the triangle, sawtooth, and square waveforms is something that is very cool that leads to some different sound and harmonic characteristics. Having the 3rd oscillator as a modulation source/LFO on a poly synth is huge.
Any interesting Trigon-6 tricks or techniques you would like to share?
A couple things! Using poly mod with pulse width as a destination gives movement to really bring a sound to life. The 2 pole 12 dB is an awesome option if you need a little more “fizz” to a sound. The sound tower editor is very useful for organization of sounds and presets.
