Karina DePiano is a classically trained, Los Angeles-based musician, specializing in music direction, keyboard playing, and production, and has most recently toured with Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour. The record-breaking tour consisted of 149 shows across 5 continents. During the three-hour long set each night, Karina was highlighted with a piano solo intro to the song “Tolerate It”, which is also featured in the Eras Tour Movie.
She has performed and toured around the world with Troye Sivan, Miley Cyrus, Fifth Harmony, Rita Ora, Daya, Niki, Julia Michaels, Ke$ha and Alessia Cara. Karina has music directed for Troye Sivan, mxmtoon, Daya, and Malia Civetz.
We chatted with Karina on how she uses the Prophet-6 in her music:
What made you choose the Prophet-6?
“A friend recommended the Prophet-6 to me and I tested it out and fell in love with its layout and sound capabilities.”
How are you using it?
“I’m using it in a live performance setting. The Prophet-6 is the foundation for the majority of songs in Troye’s set, given the dreamy, electro-pop nature of his songs. The Prophet gives me the ability to harness that ethereal vibe.“
What’s one of your favorite things about it?
“I love that everything you need is right there on the front panel. There are no hidden menus or anything. Sounds are ready to be transformed from the moment you turn it on.”
What does it give you that other instruments might not?
“I find the natural warmth behind every sound I create is unique to the Prophet-6. Many synths give you grit, which is nice, but the Prophet-6 provides the smoothest landscape for pads and supporting sounds, but still has the ability to cut through and take the lead.”
Any interesting tricks or techniques you’d like to share?
“I can’t take credit for it, but my friend, colleague, and mentor, Mike Schmid, came up with a giant cutoff knob you’ve probably seen in some of my photos. Using that with the Prophet-6 has been glorious!“
